The Varsity Boys’ Hockey Team kicked off their regular season on November 5. The team is proving their efforts are paying off after a promising start to their season.
The team has already played three regular season games and their record stands at one win, one loss and one tie. The Rams started their season with a 6 – 6 tie against Markham District. The team then went on to win an impressive 8 – 2 against Richmond Green. Most recently, the Rams fell 10 – 1 to Tanenbaum CHAT Kimel, yet they now sit an impressive third in their division with three points. The team continues to play regular season games twice a month.
The hockey team also participated in a tournament at York University, playing four other high school teams. Their sharp passes, quick speed, and precise puck-handling skills served them well, as they won two games, tied one and lost another game.
However, what makes this season special is that the team includes two girls! Alanna S. and Christina C. are the first girls to play on the Varsity Boys’ Hockey Team in St Robert’s history. Alanna says that even though “it is unfortunate that there is no girls’ hockey team, Christina and I didn’t want to give up school hockey because of that. We both love the sport and are very happy that we both made the team. They guys have been great and it’s been a lot of fun!” The Varsity Boys’ coach, Mr. Zavagno, says that the girls are great players and that he is proud to have them on the team.
The team’s countless hours of practice and hard work are truly paying off. Mr. Zavagno reiterates that “the team’s great players and individual efforts have contributed to their success. We are looking forward to the playoffs where the team will be most focused!”
