Junior and Senior Girls' Volleyball
Tammy Lau STAFF REPORTER
Volleyball season is well underway for the Lady Rams and so far, both the Junior and Senior Team have been impressive. The Senior Girls opened up the season, emerging victorious in all four matches they played and sitting first in YRAA. All matches were won in straight games and the girls’ are setting an amazing pace in terms of their point differential; in those four games, they have scored 200 points and only given up 88 to their opposition.
The coaches have been extremely impressed with the Senior Team’s start to the season. Ms. Watt is occasionally in awe when she watches the girls during their games, “Their movement on the court is amazing. The flow of it and their special orientation makes it feel like you are watching an art.” When asked about their weaknesses and things they needed to work on, she noted that she would like to see better communication on the court.
There has been some talk about whether the Senior girls would have fit in nicely playing Tier 1, after they defeated St. Maximilian – who sit atop their Tier 1 division – on Thursday December 5th. Mr. McNamara agrees that there was the opportunity for them to compete in Tier 1, however he believes that their best chance at success and repeating the championship from last year is in Tier 2, a division that they are comfortable in.
The Junior Girls have also started off the season with a bang – a 3-1 record under coaches Ms. Turrin and Ms. Coda. They are currently second in the Central division of their Tier 2 YRAA standings, with their only loss coming against St. Theresa. There are many extraordinary parts to the girls’ play on the court, but Ms. Turin feels that their dedication and their willingness to learn has been the most impressive. This perseverance is really shown through their performance because two of their four matches have been decided by a spirited third game.
When asked about what goals the team had for the season, Ms Turrin responded, “We would like to get to the playoffs, but of course there is still a lot of work to be done. However, they work extremely well as a group and definitely persevere. They have gelled together as a team and as a great group of girls.” It is evident that the Junior Girls have a great amount of support for each other and that is a vital part to a successful team.
Both teams have seen their hard work pay off in the young season, and there is certainly optimism that they will be able to keep up their winning ways as the season progresses.
