Mr. Keenan's Moustache
Berenda S, Staff Reporter
What made you start the campaign?
"Well this is my last year of teaching and I grew the moustache in the summer of 1983 before I started to teach at De La Salle College in Toronto. I have been getting periodic requests from former students, family and friends over the years to shave it off. Neither my wife, children nor granddaughter had seen me without one. No student I ever taught in my 31 years of teaching had seen me without one. No colleague either. It just struck me that it would be interesting to do it and at the same time raise $500 for Men's Health issues especially Cancer. So I joined the Movember site to raise money in memory of my father-in-law and my favourite uncle who had both passed away from cancer."
How much did you raise, and who did you donate it to?
"In the end my total was $2842 when I was really hoping to get $500. Really I was stunned by how fast the money accumulated... I guess it tells me that the moustache was not as good looking as I had thought all these years. The money went to the charity that runs the Movember campaign each November."
This Movember campaign was not only a fun event, but it can also inspire many students to raise money for great causes. What advice can you give for those who want to learn more about how to start?
"I am not really sure I have advice to give to students but I really did enjoy the whole process ...except for maybe the shaving part of it. I am glad I did it and now I have to decide whether or not to grow it back."
