Pay Them Tribute
By: an anonymous writer from Creative Writing Club
Those who went to war were probably not of sound mind
killing then dying, their bodies left behind
They gave themselves to the battlefield amid bones and blood
splattered across the ground, too much to even be cleansed by a flood
They met and fought with not the unknown
the people, not any different, just like our clones
Blind, they fought friends and enemies
to repent their sin, too little are apologies
They fought and clashed for oh so long
too many days and months spent wrong
The battle won, when all was thought to end
another attack, for a reason we can no longer comprehend
But everyone wanted their side to gain victory
for freedom for their families, the win was necessary
Physical or mental, they were not afraid of the pain
because that meant that their children would have blood in their vein
They did not want popularity, women, fortune and fame
not a biography, a day dedication, or even a name
But to give their family and country opportunities
a chance at a life that brought prosperity
For that reason, it is that we must pay them tribute
to raise our hands to our head and salute
We wear our poppies above our hearts
to defend our soldiers, before another war starts.
