The Senior Girls Volleyball Team was featured in a previous issue as the defending Tier 2 YRAA Champions. It is with great delight that I am able to report that our very own Senior Lady Rams have succeeded in their quest to repeat their championship season!
Playoffs began on Wednesday, February the 12th and the girls kicked off their playoff run with two commanding victories over Father Michael McGivney and ESC Renaissance – both in straight sets. That set the stage for the major playoff tournament on the 19th which qualified them as semi-finalists, where the ladies battled hard and punched their ticket to the semi-finals with wins against Keswick, Richmond Green and Vaughan high schools. It was a grueling tournament – the girls were on the court as early as 8:30 am, and they were competing all day with three tough matches up until 4:30 pm. All their hard work paid off as it led to the championship game against their division rival Thornlea.
The championship night took place at 6:30 pm on Friday February 21th at ESC Renaissance, giving the girls just one day after their tournament to prepare, but that didn’t faze them at all. They came out firing with powerful hits, and great play on the court. For a solid hour and a half, the Senior Girls played their heart outs and left it all on the court, leading to a spectacular result - they defended their title and remained as this year’s Tier 2 YRAA Champions. The first set was capped off with a 25-18 win, but the second set proved to be more challenging. Thankfully, the teamwork, hard work, and dedication of the Lady Rams allowed them to power their way to a nail-biting victory of 25-23.
The girls rushed onto the court after the winning point and congratulated one another on a wonderful, undefeated season. They were also, of course, eager to take a team photo and their own “selfies” with the highly sought after blue banner. When asked about what made the group of girls a championship team, Stella D. had this to say with a smile on her face, “I would say our faith in one another and unwavering determination on the court,” and that “our mental determination kept us from losing focus of our goal as we never fell more than three points behind in the championship game and the trust built over the season provided a winning court dynamic with controlled execution. Those characteristics were the greatest strengths our team had and that made the difference to make us a championship team.”
Overall, it was a magnificent season for the Senior Girls Volleyball Team and we would like to congratulate them on becoming back-to-back Tier 2 Champions! Congratulations, girls!
